Ready to Hire Professional Musicians for Your Wedding?

Gepost door admin op 30/04/2008

For those of you who face the task of choosing professional musicians to perform at your wedding, here’s some general information to make your selection easier. Your goal is to find someone who can cater to your exact needs; financially and professionally. Be selective! The wedding musicians you select must be able to provide the perfect ambience for your wedding festivities.

What’s the Difference Between Wedding Booking Agents and Self Managed Artists?

Who you hire should largely depend on the type of service you want for your wedding. It’s important to note that booking agents may not be musicians themselves; but instead may contract an individual or collection of artist(s). The financial sum you are quoted by a booking agent for your wedding is not the actual price the musician is getting paid. It’s very rare that a booking agent reveals what the artist(s) is actually getting paid. The fees quoted by a wedding booking agent are substantially higher than those of a self-managed wedding musician(s).

Self -Managed Wedding Musicians

If you’re on a semi-tight budget, you may opt for a self-managed artist/group to perform at your wedding. Basically, you’re cutting out the middle man. Booking Agents are business men/women. Theirs is a business which is competitive and expensive. Nevertheless, a higher price does not guarantee that the entertainment will be better. To find self managed artists in your area, try typing the name of your area and the words “wedding musician” or “wedding band” in your search engine. If you’re not satisfied with your results, check your phone book. If you have a friend or family member that can provide a recommendation even better. Just make sure that they have used this artist/band for a similar event. Otherwise, it isn’t a very strong recommendation.

Tips:

Always check a musicians credentials prior to signing a contract.
Ask if they have a sample recording from a previous client’s wedding
Make sure that your musician’s price coincides with a price quote given by at least two others
Make sure that all verbal agreements correspond with the written contract
Give an exact date and time for your musician’s services. Make sure this date and time are firm. Most musicians do not have flexible schedules.

Signing the Contract:

Terms of service should be agreed upon by both parties. If something seems unclear, always ask to have the phrasing clarified. Never sign a contract if it looks unprofessionally written. If you are having a theme wedding and require your band/musician to dress in theme attire make sure this is written into the contract.

How to divide perennials

Gepost door admin op 29/04/2008

One of the things that makes perennials so attractive to home
gardeners is the ability to divide and transplant the
perennials. Gardeners can use cuttings made from their
perennials in order to create new growth, share their plants
with family members and friends, or even to sell excess stock to
nurseries, garden centers and flower stores.

There are basically two reasons why gardeners choose to divide
their perennials. The first reason is for the improvement of the
health of the plants, and to encourage those plants to produce
more flowers. In many cases, an older planting of perennials
will become overgrown, and this can cause the bloom quantity of
those perennials to drop considerably. The other reason
gardeners divide perennials, of course, is to create new
plantings. Perennials can be divided easily, and these new
divisions can be used to create plantings in other parts of the
garden, or even in another garden patch.

Even though many perennials can be divided easily, not all can.
In generally, division is most feasible on those perennials that
grow in clumps, and those that have an expanding root mass.
Perennials that grow from single taproot, on the other hand
usually cannot be divided. That is because any attempt to divide
the taproot can cause the plant to die. Those perennials that
grow from a taproot should be increased by using root cuttings
or seeds instead of division.

The best time to divide those spring and early summer perennials
that can be divided is generally in the fall of the year.
Perennials that bloom in the fall or late summer should be
divided in the spring instead.

To divide perennials, the ground around the plant should first
be gently lessened with a spading fork. The clump should then be
sliced with a garden trowel and then divided into four parts.
Those four sections should then be broken by hand to create
sections four inches by four inches. Those small sections should
then immediately be transferred to a previously prepared plant
bed.

It is important for the gardener to thoroughly wet the soil a
day or two before the division is to take place. Watering
thoroughly will make it easier to dig the clump. In addition, it
is important to add compost or other organic material to the
soil. The organic material should be added to both the original
plant and the new divisions. Doing so will give the plant the
nutrition it needs and help them to thrive better in their new
location. The plants should also be watered thoroughly and fed
with a good quality fertilizer once they have been planted.

DIY Skin Savers: The Aspirin Mask

Gepost door admin op 29/04/2008

What is the aspirin mask?
The aspirin mask is a homemade BHA mask available to each and everyone of us, totally inexpensive and highly efficient, made of salicylic acid or tablets of aspirin. BHA is known to help tremendously with cleaning pores from deep inside and therefore contribute to keeping our skin blemish-free. BHAs are efficient on existing blemishes as well, by helping them heal faster and keeping pores clean afterwards.

Indications: all skin types, especially normal to oily and combination skin, acne-prone and clogged skin.

Basic preparation: 1/4 tsp. salicylic acid (ask for it at pharmacy, if you cannot find it, then crush 3-5 tablets of plain aspirin instead), distilled water. Mix the powder with the water until it becomes of a creamy consistence, apply on clean dry skin (focus on T-zone and sides of the nose). Keep it on until completely dry. Take a small cotton pad, wet it lightly and begin scrubbing the areas covered with the mask, making small circles. Finally, rinse with plenty of water. It would be excellent to apply a calming mask or a hydrating mask first, followed by your regular moisturizer. Skin will be left completely smooth and even.

There are practically unlimited versions of this mask. You can add yoghurt for an astringent effect, aloe vera, honey. You can also make the mask using a basic moisturizer mixed with salicylic acid instead of water, as it will be less harsh on the skin and will be more easy to use.
Another option is to mix salicylic acid / crushed aspirin into a mask: into a clay mask, a hydrating mask or a soothing mask. My personal favourite is aloe vera mask with a hint of salicylic acid - application is much better, skin is less irritated and dried compared to aspirin with water, the feeling left after this mask is absolutely unique so smooth and clean!

If you use powdered salicylic acid, it is advisable to limit the quantity to 1/4 tsp. for the whole face, too much will burn the skin. If using aspirin tablets, you will probably need somewhere between 3 and 10 tablets depending on the area where you apply it.

Do not apply it near to eye zone, as it would be extremely drying and irritating for the sensitive skin there.

Refrain yourself from over-using it. For very oily skin and for severe blemishes, every 3 days would be more than enough in order not to stress the skin and obtain maximum efficiency. Other skin types should use it once a week or twice a month (dry to very dry, sensitive skin).

Keeping Others Happy At Every Cost

To give happiness is considered a virtue. Please try and make
others happy, say the thinkers. I don’t know what precisely they
mean by that. So unless I meet one of them and find out the true
meaning of the statement, let me put my ideas here and think.

If accidentally, I step on someone’s foot on a busy street, and
the other person is not ready to accept my apologies, but thinks
that he will be happy only by beating me to pulp, shall I let
him do that? Should I reason with him, or make him feel happy.
All right, I lie down here without offering any resistance and
you please be happy by kicking me as much as you want. After
getting so badly beaten, I try to reach a hospital and find out
that the doctors and nurses will only feel happy by making me
wait for endless hours. If I request them to look at me sooner,
they will get angry because many other patients have to be
attended to and the medical staff is over-burdened, or so one
thinks. So I make them happy, by remaining in pain for long and
then get operated wrongly. It was my liver that was injured, but
the surgeon wrongly operated on my kidney. Shall I make him/her
unhappy by complaining of this blunder? The poor surgeon is
already burdened with work and home-related problems. How can I
add to them? So? I keep quiet. What of my family? They want me
to get healthy again and begin taking their care as soon as
possible. But I am in no state of doing that. What shall I do
now? How can I make my family unhappy? Some of them have planned
vacations; some have to buy other expensive gadgets. If I stay
in the hospital, who will pay for all those expenses? So I try
going back to work and make money.

But I am so weak and hurt, that I cannot work. My boss feels
that he will be very happy by removing me from the job. I accept
that without protest. Protesting may make him unhappy. I walk
out on the road and am very happy to be killed by a drunk driver
on the road. In the whole sequence, if I take a new birth, and
go back to every character of this story, I will be surprised to
find that they are all are very unhappy with me. My family
thinks that I cheated on them by not getting treated properly.
My surgeon will think that I should have given him one more
chance of operating upon me and making me sicker. My boss thinks
that I left an important position that is now difficult to fill.
The drunk driver thinks that I intentionally came across the car
and got hit.

Life is very difficult, whichever the way you live. Should
someone happily surrender to a rapist to make him happy? Strange
thinking always produces strange and painful results. Before we
start getting beaten by others, we must think about it and
decide to find out if they have that right. Otherwise they will
always remain unhappy, and we shall always get hit. Does this
make us think? Please view these screensavers to think more
about how life plays games with us and how to win the games. Screensavers - Living 1, Screensavers - Living 2

The CCIDC has announced that, beginning in 2009; there will be only one certification examination for interior designers in California.

Gepost door admin op 28/04/2008
Toegevoegd onder: Education + Training, Graphics + Design

This exam, proposed by the California Council for Interior Design Certification (CCIDC), will replace the CCRE as well as the three national examinations. It will be available at various examination sites throughout the state, as well as on the Internet.

Generally for the past eight years, passing of one of the three recognized national examinations, namely the CQRID, the NCIDQ, or both parts of the NKBA, plus a supplemental California Codes and Regulations Examination, the CCRE was required to an aspiring Certified Interior Designer. Only one national examination was recognized prior to eight years ago. These examinations are not a part of the required education or experience that are described in the Business & Professions Code, Section 5800.

The purpose for this modification in examinations is to bring the California certification in interior design examination in line with Section 139 of the California Business and Professions Code and to make it available to those who fall under the three categories of education and experience under the law, as well as to those with “experience only”.

In order to become a Certified Interior Designer, candidates and students passing the examination will still need to meet all the other requirements. By providing the prevailing CCRE for an extended time period for those who wish to take it, CCIDC carries on to honor those who have taken one of the current national examinations.

Old Soul Violinist - Maxim at the San Francisco Symphony

Twenty-seven-year-old Russian violinist Maxim Vengerov starts his second encore of his solo performance by dragging a chair out from backstage at Davies Symphony Hall, in San Francisco.

“I have been performing since I was five years old,” he says in lightly accented English. “It is a great privilege to play for audiences like you, and you come to hear me play. Between us there is music. But I never get to communicate in words. So, he sits casually and crosses his legs, “I want to talk to you. Ask me some questions.”

So starts an extraordinary conversation between a remarkable old soul violinist and 1,500 of his closest friends. One person asks why he held his bow so high during the first number, Bach’s ‘Toccata and Fugue in D minor’. Written originally for the organ, this complicated piece requires a specially rounded bow to make the playing easier, he replies. “And you may have noticed that I did not play that piece on my Baroque violin. It’s ill with all the changes in humidity and weather.”

“Tell us about your violin,” another person tosses across the nearly sold out auditorium. “My instrument was made in Crimea in 1727 by Antonio Stradivarius. It is an ex-Kreisler instrument, meaning that it once belonged to the great violinist, Fritz Kreisler. And I was lucky enough to get it at Christie’s auction in 1998.” This raises murmurs of appreciation from the audience.

“Will you compose in the future?” Vengerov chuckles, “I’m not very popular in the composing world because I like tonal music, music that has a melody that you can take home with you.” The audience cheers in agreement.

“Tell us about your UNICEF work.” Vengerov loses his characteristic smile and light-hearted nature. “I have traveled to Uganda, Thailand, and Kosovo and seen what terrible things have happened to the children there. Some have lost limbs; some have lost the ability to speak. They have no expressions. Then I see what music can do for them. They start to dance, smile and forget their worries. Here, I will play for you what I played for them.” And he plays ‘Balalaika’, a piece completely plucked, to his third standing ovation.

Love of Bach

Maxim Vengerov, then, is an unusual mixture of boyish charm and old-world mastery. He opened his concert with Bach’s ‘Toccata and Fugue in D-Minor’, which has been made famous by organ-playing vampires and monsters everywhere. I was wondering how a single violinist, surrounded by an empty stage and an anticipatory audience, would bring the fugue to life with just one bow and four strings. Before long, I had completely forgotten that there was only one person performing, as the varying melodies danced and intertwined.

The program was built on Vengerov’s love of Bach and melody, and included a Russian composition ‘Echo - Sonata for Solo Violin, Opus 69′ by Rodion Shchedrin. The program notes state: The Echo Sonata refers back to Bachs music for solo violin - it is an echo of Bach’s music. “I first played this piece when I was 10 years old,” he says. “I memorized it because I wanted to impress the composer, who was in the audience. As you will see, it’s still very difficult to memorize.” Written to challenge the stoutest of violinists, Shchedrin filled the piece with a flurry of wildly spinning melodies, requiring exacting nimbleness of mind and finger.

The rest of the program showcased four of the six sonatas, written by Eugene Ysaye, a talented Belgian violinist who wrote each of the pieces for different virtuosos. ‘The Sonata No. 2 in A Minor, Opus 27, no. 2′ is dedicated to Jacques Thibaud, who was “one of Ysaye’s spiritual children,” according to the program notes. “And this is perhaps why the music takes is such a ’soul-searching work’ filled with rue and a dance of furies.”

The program notes that “‘The Sonata in D minor, Opus 27, no. 3, Ballade’ is dedicated to George Enescu, the Rumanian composer and violist whose friendship became increasingly vital to Ysaye in his later years, as the musical establishment became dismissive and his gifts - this is a spectacular concentrated music that offers varied characters - from the spare, agonized outset to the fabulously technical run-to-the-finish. To hear Gypsy elements in the music is to hear it as homage to the dedicatee.”

“‘The Sonata in E minor, Opus 27, no. 4′ is dedicated to Fritz Kreisler,” the program continues, “a violinist who combined virtuosity with a ferociously expressive insight, and also wrote light and lighthearted Viennese parlor pieces - the music of this piece is pure and unaffected. The final moments are obsessive, intense and delirious.”

The final piece of the concert was written in tribute to Manual Quiroga, a Spanish violinist in the “great tradition of Sarasate.” It was dashing and full of bravado, honoring Quiroga’s popular in Europe and the United States. “There is a touch of obviously Spanish music and the piece captures a youthful, optimistic spirit.”

What else is there to do in Western Siberia?

Real Estate Terms - From Condominiums to Deeds of Trust

Gepost door admin op 27/04/2008
Toegevoegd onder: Center For Real Estate

When buying or selling a property, it always helps to have a basic understanding of real estate terms. In this on going series of articles, we take a look at definitions starting with “condominium.”

1) Condominium - A type of ownership in real property where all of the owners in a collection of properties jointly own everything except the interior of each property. Accordingly, the jointly area is run by a homeowner’s association, which can assess fees to the owners for improvements, etc.

2) Contract, or Sales Contract, or Contract of Purchase and Sale - the agreement between buyer and seller. In most jurisdictions it must be in writing in order to be enforceable. It covers such things as the identity of the property, the purchase price, any conditions of the sale, the settlement date or escrow period, when the buyer will occupy the property, etc.

3) Contract for Deed - a written document which provides that Deed does not pass to the buyer until the final payment has been made. In the event of default by the buyer, the property reverts to the seller. (One sees these occasionally. I’ve seen them when an owner was financing the sale of raw land for a buyer.)

4) Deposit, or Good Faith Deposit - an amount of money tendered by the buyer at the time a contract offer is made on real property. The contract spells out who holds it, and circumstances under which the seller gets it, and circumstances under which it’s returned to the buyer. Typically, the seller gets it as part of the purchase price at settlement, or as liquidated damages if the buyer defaults. The buyer usually gets it back if a condition of settlement is not met.

5) Deed - the written document which conveys title to real property. Some states are “record” states and ownership is defined by the deed’s being recorded at the courthouse in which the property lies.

6) Deed of Trust - the document which allows a third party to act for the lender should the lender need to forclose on real property used as collateral for a loan.

As you can image, there are many real estate terms for which you have a general understanding. In our next article, we continue with the terms starting with “Easement.”

Keep Your Blood Sugar Level Under Control

Gepost door admin op 27/04/2008

Controlling blood sugar (glucose) levels is one of the most important aspects of diabetes management. It will make you feel better in the short-term and it will help you to stay fit and healthy in the long term.

The National Committee on Prevention Detection Evaluation, the chromium and many interesting articles. People who do not have diabetes keep their blood glucose levels within a narrow range for most of the time. The beta cells in the pancreas are able to produce just the right amount of insulin at the right time and they are constantly fine-tuning the blood glucose level. People with diabetes do not have this fine control over their blood glucose levels.

This might be because the beta cells have been destroyed and there is no insulin production at all, as in Type 1 diabetes. Alternatively, it may be that the body does not respond to the insulin and/or not enough insulin is produced when it is needed, as in Type 2 diabetes. The approach to managing Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes is slightly different, but whichever type of diabetes you have, you will still need to step in and take over that fine-tuning of your blood glucose level.

Controlling blood glucose levels is a bit like trying to lasso an unruly animal. Blood glucose is dynamic; it changes constantly and it is influenced by a host of factors including your choice of food, how much you eat, the timing of your medication or insulin, your emotions, illnesses, your weight, and your body’s resistance to insulin.

Some of these factors are relatively constant from day to day and are quite easily accounted for; some factors are more variable. No two days are ever exactly the same, or entirely predictable, and this makes it difficult. So, blood glucose is not easily lassoed.

In practical terms, you will need to learn about those things that raise your blood glucose level and those things that lower your blood glucose level. Then you will need to balance these factors on a day-to-day and possibly even hour-by-hour basis. This means coordinating medication, food and activity levels, whilst making appropriate allowances for stress, illness or changes in your daily activities.

You will be aiming to avoid the extreme highs and lows, trying to manipulate your blood glucose toward the normal range. You will be doing regular finger-prick blood glucose tests and using these results to help balance those things that make your blood glucose rise with those that make it fall. When you have evened out your blood glucose level you will still need to keep an eye on it and continue to make adjustments.

Controlling blood glucose is a continuous process and it will require your attention from now on, for the rest of your life. Don’t worry! It may sound daunting to you right now, but it will soon become second nature.

People who do not have diabetes have blood glucose levels between 4 and 8 mmol/l for most of the time. In general, people with diabetes should try to aim for test results between 4 and 10 mmol/l most of the time. Some people - pregnant women, for example - will need to aim for tighter control. Other people - young children, the elderly, or those at risk of severe hypoglycemia, for example - will need to aim for higher levels.

Your diabetes team will give you individual guidance on the blood glucose levels that you should be aiming for.

In the short term, controlling blood glucose levels is important in order to avoid diabetic emergencies - very high or very low blood glucose levels. Both of these conditions are unpleasant and can be dangerous, so they should be avoided if at all possible.

High blood glucose levels in Type 1 diabetes, if caused by a lack of insulin, can lead to a condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis or ‘DKA’ which can be fatal if it is not treated in time.

When You’re In sales Always Aim Higher

Gepost door admin op 27/04/2008

Yesterday I did a sales training program for a great company. This company is 64 years old and makes a product whose name you would recognize immediately. The sales training was scheduled the day after the company introduced a new product. This product has great features and outstanding benefits for their customers.

The outside sales reps were given a goal to sell 25 units within the next 12 months. For the purpose of this newsletter and to maintain the privacy of the company they shall remain anonymous.

I would like to share some of the thoughts I have on how to achieve consistent selling results. Here we go…

Let’s talk about the principles of GOAL SETTING. Most people think they have goals when they really only have dreams. There is a simple yet powerful goal setting model. It has five steps:

1. A true goal is in writing. Always has been, always will be. If it’s not on paper it’s not a goal. When you take a thought and put it to paper it becomes a goal. This is a bedrock principle to goal setting. Write it down!

2. Goals must be specific. If you’re goal doesn’t contain numbers, it’s not specific enough. There’s a huge difference between “I want to earn a lot of money” and “my goal in 2002 is to earn $125,000.” The specificity of your goal is what gets your creative juices flowing.

3. To keep you focused on your goal it must have a completion date. Too many dreams fall short because they never become written goals with deadlines. There is just something empowering when you establish a self-imposed deadline.

4. Goals never get done by themselves. Goals are “what” you want to achieve. Once they are established you immediately begin to think of “how” you will achieve them. Your goals must have specific action steps or they won’t get done.

5. Your goals must be prioritized. Simply stated, if you have 10 goals, you must prioritize them using the numbers 1-10. This is another way of saying first things first - always focus on what’s important first. Prioritizing makes you enterprising.

There you have it, the five-step goal setting model. I believe impossible dreams become possible when they’re converted to written goals.

Don’t take my word for it, listen to what Lou Holtz, former coach at Notre Dame has to say about goal setting.

He was inspired by David Schwartz’s book “The Magic Of Thinking Big.” After reading the book he sat down and prepared a list of 107 goals he wanted to achieve during his lifetime.

At the time, some of these were very lofty goals including meeting the pope, skydiving, being invited to a White House dinner, and even wanting to appear on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show.

To date, Lou Holtz has achieved 99 out of 107 of those goals. He says, “My life changed after I made the list. I became a participant rather than a spectator in life.”

This goal setting model works for personal and professional goals.

Yesterday, I told the salespeople to take their company’s goal of 25 units and increase it to 28 units. Here’s why I suggested that. If you always want to achieve your sales goals - ALWAYS AIM HIGHER.

Here’s another tip for you. Always take your annual goal and break it down to the smallest unit of measure. For example: 28 for the year is 14 for six months. 14 becomes 7 three months. 7 becomes, with a little rounding,
2 per month. 2 per month becomes 1 every two weeks.

If you want to achieve bottom-line results you can forget about 28 per year if you focus on selling one unit every two weeks. Goal setting is all about focus.

When you focus on your goals you will always achieve the results you are seeking.
