In Texas Hold ‘Em poker, pocket pairs, especially of high rank, can be good starter hands. But pocket pairs do have long odds to improving since there are only two cards in the deck that can complete the hand to a set of three cards. It’s about 24-1 that you’ll hit one of those two cards.

For instance, a small pocket pair, like 3s, in early or middle position should be folded if a raise comes out ahead of you. But in late position, with no raise, you can call the blind and limp in to see the flop.
