Poker enthusiasts usually have one question that they ask time and time again: “How much money do I need to play at a certain stake?” The common answer and the safe one for all poker related inquiries is that it depends. But that’s not what we’re looking at here, we to give some solid advice on bakroll management.

There are two things to consider when deciding on whether or not you are financially in the position to play at a certain stake. One is your financial outlook. The other is your temperament.

Mike Caro, one of poker online’s most respected minds, has made the temperament argument simple. There are three temperaments in poker. Plodders, Players and Plungers. Plodders, will play for pennies to avoid going broke. They are very prone to risk aversion. Players are your standard poker players, they will take risk when necessary, and use edges to their advantage. Plungers on the other hand are the maniacs who love risk, and want to jump right in.

The next thing to examine is your current financial situation and your financial outlook. Do you have a steady income outside of poker? Are you likely to be able to replenish your bankroll without stressing yourself out with other financial obligations in your life? If you look at bankroll management this way, you can more easily find a style that works for you.

Instead of following the “you need 30 buy-ins to play a certain stake level” general advice that is credible, but in my opinion overly general,” you should take at look at your tolerance for risk and compare that to your ability to fund yourself on the felt. If you don’t mind the risk, and have a steady stream of income, by all means, you can be a plunger and play with the big boys even if you don’t meet the 30 buy in requirement. On the other hand, if Poker is your only source of income, you’d probably be more akin to playing as a casino player or even a plodder in order to keep your finances secure.

A online poker player who calls a bet in poker is entitled to see the original bettor’s online poker hand. That is why it is named “calling” - you are calling to see the bettor’s hand. Sometimes though there are gray areas in which players are not sure if they have to show their hands. This situation usually arises when someone who is on a bluff gets called. Often the bluffer will just muck the poker hand and make a comment such as, “Good call - you caught me” or “I’ve got nothing.” Is the caller then obligated to show the hand to win the pot? The rule varies depending on whether it is a cash game or tournament. In a cash game, the pot is automatically pushed to the caller, who does not have to show the pocket cards. When the original bettor mucked, the caller automatically became the winner because that caller was the only one holding live cards. In a tournament the rule is often different. Most poker rooms follow WSOP guidelines, which in this case, require that a winning hand be shown even though the original bettor mucked. Dealers don’t always invoke this rule, but nonetheless it exists as a way of preventing collusion. In tournaments, it is possible for players to collude by “chip dumping” their stacks on a partner in an attempt to create a big stack advantage and advance the remaining player further into the tournament and closer to the money.

I was playing full stack online poker with $50 at a .25/.50 NL Holdem cash game. I was in early position with pocket Queens and I made a standard 3x raise to $1.50. I got two callers. The flop was ace high with a couple of rags and two spades. In first position I felt I had to continue bet and represent the ace. I led for $2.25 and got one caller. The turn was another small spade. I was holding the Qs. Heads up with the 2nd nut flush draw, I decided to bet again. I bet $3.75 and again was flat called. If nothing were to come up on the river I might either check or bet another similar bet like $4.00 with the intention of blocking my online poker opponent from making too big of a bet for me to call. Also, he’s been passive the whole way, so he’s likely to call me with his weak holding. Instead, another spade came up. I had the 2nd nut flush. My opponent only had $12 left in his stack. I was pretty confident that he did not have the king of spades because he showed no sign of aggression during the hand. I led for $5.65 and my opponent shoved. I called the $6+ bet. My opponent had no spades and an off suit A-7 for a weak top pair. Essentially, by playing against weak poker online opponents, my lead out bets in first position controlled the action of an unconfident holding. If he re-raised on the flop, I would never have been given the chance to see the turn or the river, but since he never took charge, I was able to dictate the pace and was lucky enough to river the winning hand.

In Texas Hold ‘Em poker, pocket pairs, especially of high rank, can be good starter hands. But pocket pairs do have long odds to improving since there are only two cards in the deck that can complete the hand to a set of three cards. It’s about 24-1 that you’ll hit one of those two cards.

Pocket pairs should be played based on your position at the table, the card rankings and any betting that comes out ahead of you. For instance, a small pocket pair, like 3s, in early or middle position should be folded if a raise comes out ahead of you. But in late position, with no raise, you can call the blind and limp in to see the flop.

The better your cards, the the better your chances of winning with best pair in poker online. Just keep in mind that pocket 10s get beat about 60 percent of the time, and Queens lose about 30 percent of the times they’re played.

Here are the average losing percentages for pocket pairs:

2s — 88 percent

3s — 88 percent

4s — 87 percent

5s — 86 percent

6s — 85 percent

7s — 81 percent

8s — 76 percent

9s — 69 percent

10s –59 percent

Pocket Kings are beat 10 percent of the time, and even Aces get busted. If your small or medium pair does not complete to a set on the flop, and a raise comes out, it’s probably best to fold. Keep this in mind when you play poker online.

Eric Lynch didn’t just jump into the poker world. He went to school and worked in the corporate world first as a software developer. Full-time job, and decent pay.

Well, he never went back. He cashed out in his World Series of Poker run with 600,000 dollars, and it’s been professional poker ever since.

“There’s a certain sense of accomplishment and satisfaction you get from being part of team,” says Lynch speaking on the corporate environment. And it’s quite different than the poker game. “Poker is a very solitary game,” comments Lynch, and unlike the corporate world the goals aren’t always easily attainable.

“In a corporate environment the goals are usually very attainable and relatively simple (even though they may not feel that way).” On the contrary, you fail more often than you succeed at the poker table, at least in terms of winning the whole shebang.

He ends saying he’s quite fortunate in that he’s been allowed to be there for his kids “firsts.” You know those things that a lot of people miss out on because they’re working, Lynch didn’t. “I saw both of my kids’ first steps, first time they crawled, and heard their first words. ” And that’s saying something really good about the character and responsibility of Lynch.
